Pineapple Salad

The pineapple salad was originally made for a bento lunch so it is a little different than we make traditionally, using only one pineapple ring, cut for easier eating and 3 cherries served on butter lettuce leaves.

The way I learned it from my ex-mother in law is to line a plate with shredded lettuce (we often substitute organic baby spinach), top with 2 pineapple rings, a dollop of mayo in the center of each, sprinkle with shredded cheddar cheese and put a cherry in the center of each.

Our favorite meal to eat this with is spaghetti or noodles using a marinara sauce- it complements the meal so well, and is an oft-requested favorite.  Miss picky (no condiment girl) has hers with no mayo.

Perfect Gravy (easy)

For everyone who says they can't make a gravy- if it is because you have no patience to stand there and stir, stir, stir to make sure it all gets incorporated and not burn (yep, that's my problem, same reason I can't make pudding on the stove top- I always try to rush it) the microwave is your new best friend.

Here is the basic white sauce (medium) I got from a cookbook long ago and how I change it up depending on what I am making.

In an 8 cup Pyrex glass measuring cup for each cup gravy melt 1 Tbsp butter (you can use pan drippings or oil or whatever- and you can use less than called for). You can use fat-free stock or bullion to make it fat free.Add 1 Tbsp flour and whisk the daylights out of it.

Microwave on high for exactly 45 seconds, no more, no less. This is whether you are making 1 cup of gravy or 6. (6 is the most you can make in the 8 cup Pyrex.)

Whisk the crap out of it again and add any seasonings you might like and then add 1 cup liquid- milk, stock, 1 cup water one bullion cube, whatever you like and microwave 2 minutes. Whisk again. Keep nuking and whisking 2 minutes at a time til it is boiling and at your desired consistency.

You cannot mess this up, it is perfect every time. You can make a basic gravy with butter and stock or milk for cream gravy then add pan drippings at the end if you desire.

This is way better than any you can buy in a can, mix or jar, and you know exactly what is going into it.

This was originally stuck in with other random useful hints and tips but it is one of the things I still see all the time, that people can't or won't make their own gravy and it is so very easy this way that I thought it worth repeating.

Win a $45 CSN stores GC to help Santa finish filling those lists CLOSED

Congrats to Cindi @ Moomette's Magnificents, who is the winner as chosen by random.org

We had a busy Thanksgiving holiday, a ton of cooking and baking- the fridge is bursting at the seams.

Usually that means we start gearing up for Christmas, with even more cooking and baking and goodie making going on, but this year we're doing things a wee bit different since we FINALLY get to redo our kitchen counters.  I know, I know, I can't wait, I hate the stained, dull drab ones in there now too.

Since I am more like Tim "the toolman" Taylor than Bob Vila, we'll see how that goes- but they will be Cobalt Blue instead of blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah beige so I am excited.

Of course that means I have my eye on some new adjustable bar stools for the island- Miss Fiddiddler (aka Devii) who can't sit still to save her life has kind of made ours ahh precarious is the best word for them, I suppose, but since the kitchen was so dull and drab and hasn't been touched in over 10 years! we pretty much went in, did our work and got out and I am counting on the makeover of the counters making it once more our fave place to be, or at least one of them.

Here are a few that I am eyeballing-

Do any of these catch your eye?  I am leaning heavily towards the set of 3 which is on sale for $119.62!  I know, right, very reasonable- through allbarstools.com, one of the over 200 stores that make up the of CSN family of stores.

As a CSN stores preferred blogger, they are very generously letting me give one of you a $45 GC that can be used in any of their stores- from toys to kitchenware and yes, even adjustable bar stools, you can spend it on anything you like.  It does not include shipping, but you can find TONS of items that ship free.

The various CSN stores are also doing something nice to make your holiday shopping easier- all items that guarantee delivery by Christmas eve are marked with a *.  If you have to have it by then, you know if you see the * you won't be disappointing your recipients.

THE GIVEAWAY:  One lucky reader will win a $45 CSN stores GC.  Open to residents of the US & Canada 18+ Ends 12/11 11:59pm CST

Wordless Wednesday- Happy Thanksgiving and Happy 4th Birthday Ian! w/linky

Myspace Graphics

Sometimes it is hard to remember how very much we have to be thankful for, especially when life seems to be kicking you in the butt more than usual. Take this time to count your blessings and remember how fortunate you truly are.

While we are at it, I'd like to add Happy 4th Birthday, Ian! We are truly blessed to have you in our lives.

Yes, this is a rare sighting of the almost always behind the scenes Gigi with her boy!  I know, I know, but it is truly one of about 3 pics of us together and we should probably have a record somewhere that I am in fact his Gigi and not some sort of imaginary friend. ;-)

Our favorite holiday traditions- Hickory Farms

Hickory Farms means so many things to our family that we were thrilled to be chosen as part of the Hickory Farms blog tour from Mom Central.

We received the Home for the Holidays gift set which included 2 - 10 oz. Our Signature Beef Summer Sausages, 10 oz. Italian Recipe Beef Summer Sausage, 8 oz. Big Barn Cheddar®, 7 oz. Cheddar & Havarti Blend, 4 oz. Three Cheese & Onion Wedge, 4 oz. Smooth N Sharp Wedge, 2.25 oz. Sweet Hot Mustard, 2.5 oz. Honey Pineapple Mustard and 2 - .5 oz. Cracked Wheat Crackers.

The box arrived and we were impressed with the new eco-conscious packaging and love the fact that in addition to being 100% recyclable, for every tree harvested, another is planted.

Two things that we find notable-  Hickory Farms offers free shipping to APO/FPO military addresses, which is fabulous for sending a taste of home to your loved ones.  Also, read more about how they are helping end childhood hunger through Share Our Strength here.

I am a longtime fan of the Sweet Hot Mustard and was thrilled when I could buy it locally in one of our local market's deli sections, even if only seasonally, and whenever I want my sandwiches or snacks special that's what I use, but HOLY COW is the Honey Pineapple Mustard OMG DELISH!  I won't abandon Sweet Hot completely, but the new to me Honey Pineapple is right up there.

In addition to fabulous food, Hickory Farms to us is tradition.  Here in our family, like many others, traditions come and traditions go as our lives get more hectic, our family dynamics change and some just don't fit our lifestyles any more.

One tradition that hasn't changed is Hickory Farms for the holidays.  They have something for every budget, and this year have five signature gift boxes ranging from $16 to $100.   An affordable treat which will delight the recipients-  I don't know anyone who doesn't immediately know they are getting a real treat when they see their gift is from Hickory Farms.

The first gift I can recall taking Dawn shopping for and letting her pick out on her own while she was still in her stroller is a Hickory Farms gift set for her daddy.  I knew that whatever she picked would be a winner, so she had free range to choose whatever she liked.  Through the years it has been kind of a joke since of course it is the gift he has to share with the girls and they pick it out for themselves at least as much as for their father.

Nowadays we have yet another tradition- Santa does a super-quickie extra drive by on Christmas Eve, usually while we are driving around looking at the lights, and leaves us new PJ's or blankies, a movie and a "feast" of Hickory Farms cheeses, sausages and other goodies to supplement what we've been baking and cooking to help make the time go quicker til bedtime.  We enjoy each other, some fabulous food and a ton of laughter.

Yet another tradition featuring Hickory Farms is that it is also our New Year's Eve feast- we love being together to ring in the new year and while we watch the countdown (Dick Clark HAS to be a robot or something, no?) and we enjoy the same types of goodies as we had for Christmas Eve, yet different as we change up the flavors and crackers and whatnot.

As if that wasn't enough, we have given and received many different Hickory Farms gift sets through the years- when we see where the package is from, we know we are in for a real treat.

Nowadays you can shop online for Hickory Farms, but I remember the store in our mall when I was growing up, and even here (well, in Little Rock) they have a koisk for the holidays which we love to go to because there is always something new to sample as well as many old favorites.

Is Hickory Farms part of your family's traditions?  If so, how?  Spill the beans, we might be missing out on something, and you know how we hate that. ;-)

I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Hickory Farms and received a signature gift box from Hickory Farms to thank me for taking the time to participate.

Family Talk Review and Giveaway - great stocking stuffer ~closed~

My family talks. A lot. About everything. We know everything about each other... Or so I thought.

When we received Family Talk, I thought  it would be great for people that, well, AREN'T my family. People who aren't really close and don't share everything with each other. To be honest, I thought I would find it kinda... eh... cheesy? and more geared toward the younger family members of which we have plenty of nieces and nephews but not living with us, but we wanted to review it for our readers because it did seem like a good idea for a family game with kids in the grade to middle school age range.  I figured we would rehash all the stuff we already knew about each other, then put it up until Ian was old enough to ask us these same questions.

Boy was I wrong.  First of all, you should know, I don't know nearly as much as I thought I did about my family. Among other things, I learned the real name of my Great Grandmother Buddy, on my mothers mothers side. For the sake of her memory and dignity, and for the sake of all our readers, I will not share it here, or anywhere.  Ever.  She hated her name, loathed her very German name, so she was Buddy. It started at the sewing factory she worked at (she was an amazing seamstress) and I guess it caught on.

Overall, this is a great conversation starter. Some questions thoughtful, some funny, some geared toward the older members, and all are meant to get people talking. Each question has lead to a conversation, each conversation revealing more than a simple answer. This is a wonderful, non-competitive game everyone can play. They also have variations for kids, teens, camp and grandparents, each with questions geared to the specific group.

Family Talk won Conversation of the Year from Creative Child magazine in 2009, it was developed by a mom and occupational therapist and has even been featured on the today show.

It is a simple keychain with cards, so it is easily portable... a good waiting in line or traveling game! At only $10 I feel it is a very fair price, and really, what price can you put on getting close to, getting to really -know- your family?   It would be a wonderful stocking stuffer.

THE GIVEAWAY:  One lucky reader will win an award winning Family Talk game.  US only 18+ Ends 12/5 11:59pm CST

Menu for week of 11/22 - 11/28

This is a busy week of cooking and baking for us-  Ian's 4th Birthday Cake and cupcakes- How To Train Your Dragon, naturally!  If you want to see how we did it and if it came out (we're MAKING IT ALL UP OURSELVES) be sure to stop on back we'll share the wonderful or not so wonderful results with you right here on Our Loonyverse.  Hopefully it will be a major success but if not maybe we'll have a funny story like we did with our spectacular failure, the Incredible Bouncing Bread.. ;-)

Hehe  now that you know our Epic Fail with the bread, what kind of awesome kitchen blunders have you made?  Share, please!  And as usual, we'd love to know what's cooking at your house- and what if any plans you have for the holiday weekend.

Chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, cream gravy, peas and or green beans (Does it get any more southern?)

Breakfast for dinner- either poached eggs and Thomas' english muffins or breakfast sandwiches, fruit

Crockpot HM mac and cheese, broccoli or cali blend veggies

Thanksgiving feast-  one up at Ken's mom's house including baked and fried turkey, venison and pretty much every side you can imagine- this is a very large extended family dealio where we all contribute-  dangerous with a ton of awesome cooks in the family, but somehow we survive it year after year-  the main things we will bring up are: deviled eggs, Ian's birthday cake and cupcakes, and pumpkin roll and instead of Kyra's awesome pumpkin cheesecake we are pretty sure this year we will be making Paula Deen's seriously amazing gooey pumpkin cake made with a butter pecan cake mix- OMG was it ever good- after that, whatever else we are inspired to bring.

The second Thanksgiving meal will be Alton Brown's brined turkey that we bake here (we NEED the leftovers and meat for sandwiches and whatnot!)  I know other people feel the exact opposite, but after the stuffing it's my fave part.  Along with a 20+ lb bird here we'll have stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes and veggies along with more deviled eggs while we watch the first Christmas movie of the year (for us) Miracle on 34th Street- the original in black and white.  After this we are complete and total slugs and good for nothing much but laying around in Turkey induced comas and berating each other for  letting each other eat too much.

(Ha, I am better at this than the rest of them but here's my secret for not eating TOOOOOO TOOOOOOOOO much -  go straight for the stuffing and gravy with only tiny portions of everything else. ;-) )

Leftovers- I am sure we'll be making our experiment that turned out so well- the Taste of Thanksgiving Rings- truly the best leftover turkey recipe I've ever tried and not just because we made it up- it really is fabulous!  And this wonderful day after thanksgiving will be our first batch of fudge for the year for dessert- btw if you are interested, our fudge is still the easiest to make and still undefeated! ;-)

Something easy, probably use the stock we will make from boiling down the carcass and make turkey veggie noodle or turkey rice soup and serve with crackers or sandwiches.

Fair Trade Products Stunning Glass Pendant Review and Giveaway ~closed~

As you know, we love fair-trade and such around here. As part of our different kind of Christmas, we are focusing on quality, and things that give back. Some things give back in a more subtle way... when we buy fair trade instead of traditional global market, we know that we are supporting the workers and helping them have good lives, we know what we got wasn't under child labor or sweat shops or anything of that nature. That is why I love Fair Trade Products.

On their site, this quote captures their philosophy: You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build anew model that makes the existing model obsolete. - Buckminster Fuller

On the About Us section on the web site, Sarita Sidau tells the story of how she got started; Her first day she sold nothing but a chocolate bar, and got a citation from a police officer on her way to get her daughter from school. But that did not keep her down! Now she is successful at her local market, and, lucky for us- online!

We were sent two stunning glass pendants to review- I kept a blue triangle on round wire, and Dawn chose the yellow one on a cord.

Cute Ian story now: I was wearing my necklace, which fades from dark to light blue, and has very pretty bubbles in it. It certainly looks like something mystical!

Ian was staring at it, reaching out to play with it a little. Mind you, he had been in an awful, terrible, horrible no good sort of mood, so when I saw how fascinated he was, I decided to play on. "Ian sweetie... you like my new necklace? You know something special about it... it's magic. All the little bubbles have magic in them... if you wear it, something really good will happen. But only if you behave!" Because, as he knows, magic only works when you are being good.

So he put the necklace on, very happily, and he of course started behaving in a much more acceptable manner. He did get his magic surprises... we found one of his favorite books that had been lost for months because of moving, If you give a Mouse a Cookie... and of course he got cookies after dinner, because he decided he was my little Mouse! Not saying these necklaces will always bring magic, but, y'know... doesn't hurt to wish, and at least you will look cute doing it ;)

Looking over the site, you will see her prices are all fair, and there is a wonderful selection of jewelry made in Chile, Fair Trade coffee cheaper than I pay at the coffee shop here ($10/pound, opposed to $12-15 for coffee I am pretty sure isn't fair trade.

One more note about the coffee, quoted from her site- These wonderful coffees are from Deans Beans in Massachusetts; I love this precedent-setting, no-nonsense, yet fun-loving company. (At my stall at the Irvine farmers' market, I clearly display their poster which states that there is no middle ground. Fair & Unfair- There's No Middle Ground.

She also has tea, sugar, and a few more products "coming soon."Overall, she has very good products and a wonderful philosophy- "Be the change we want to see in the world"-Gandhi. This is a company we are very happy to support.

THE GIVEAWAY:  One of our fortunate readers will receive a stunning handmade glass pendant based on availability- we can't guarantee style because they are handmade.  Open to US residents 18+ ends 12/5

Ruth's Brownie Kitchen- review and giveaway ~closed~

Sponsored by Tomoson.com
We were fortunate enough to be offered the chance to review our choice of brownies, biscotti or cookies from Ruth's Brownie (and Biscotti and Cookie) Kitchen. We went to the site and were excited to be able to choose between the flavors but to be perfectly frank, when we went to the site and saw that it was $19.95 for a half-dozen brownies we selected to review we were a bit skeptical.

Sure, they use premium ingredients such as ultra-premium Valrhona chocolates and cocoa along with the very best farm-fresh, natural or organic butter, eggs, flour and other ingredients available.  We are bakers and know that ingredients aren't cheap, but twenty bucks for 6 brownies seemed a bit pricey so the claim on the site that they are the affordable handcrafted treat made us go hmm.

Here's just a bit about the company, you can hop on over to Ruth's Kitchen to read more about their gourmet brownies and other goodies:

Ruth's Brownie (and Cookie and Biscotti) Kitchen is a small, artisinal bakery and from the very beginning has been committed to making the world's best gourmet brownies and now cookies and biscotti as well.  The company is named after Grandmother Ruth and is based on her recipes and recreates the delicious homemade taste from childhood.
When we saw that each batch is prepared to order and singly we thought of course that takes time, effort and dedication, so most likely they are worth it for what they are. They are shipped within hours of being removed from the oven and have a fabulous freshness guarantee.

Before I tell you about the brownies, I want to tell you what an amazing company Ruth's Brownie Kitchen is to work with.  We had a problem with delivery- as soon as I let them know, they tracked the package- the post office swore they delivered (they didn't, this may or may not be because around that time our mail delivery truck caught on fire-  we received notice that some things were damaged and a couple days later received what was scorched but salvageable.  Even though it wasn't their fault, the very next day they made a fresh batch to send us.  LOVE THAT, not all companies will go the extra mile when they have tracked and are told it was delivered.  I will not hesitate to do business with a company with such excellent standards- when they say they want the customer to be 100% satisfied, they really mean it.

After opening the package to find a fun, colorful box we are happy to admit we were wrong in our thinking-   the hazlenut extra-fudgy brownies we chose were HUGE.  We're talking the 4 1/2 that were left after the review all but filled a gallon zip-top freezer bag huge.

The brownie itself was absolutely delicious- we're talking the kind of rich, fudgy treat you want to savor.  The hazlenuts were plentiful and again huge, not chips or even chunks but big bites of nutty goodness and when we split the first brownie in parts we saw whole nuts.

To be perfectly honest if any of us ate a whole one of these gourmet brownies we'd have been sick to our stomachs for the rest of the day- while we love treats, especially superior quality ones, each brownie was just too big and rich for one person.  Dawn and I are more of a quarter of the size brownie they sent and Ki made short work of half a one but even that was pushing it but she just couldn't make herself stop.  Dev (aka the sweethound) is at an all-day event for Model UN, but if anyone can eat a whole one it will be her (and I can tell you right now, she'll ask to take hers tomorrow for the second half of the event and have enough to share with friends).

Here's the funny part- Ken isn't much of a sweet eater, we were together 9 years before he even tried our fudge that everyone raves over.  (He has since become a fudge addict, but that's a whole 'nother story.)  He had to try a brownie-  yeah, first time for everything.  They looked and smelled so good and I guess our reactions convinced him but he helped himself to half of one and then said he had dibs on the other half since he couldn't eat it all in one sitting.  If that doesn't convince you these are a quality product, nothing will.

Win a Naumes Perfect Pear Gift Set review and giveaway ~closed~

We are absolutely thrilled to tell you about a remarkable company.  Naumes Fruit Gifts, aka donatefruit.com.

What makes them so special is not only their amazing gifts, but that each fruit gift sold is matched, pound for pound and donated to food banks to feed hungry families.

For many families, 2010 has proven to be an exceptionally tough year, ours included, which is one of the reasons why we have chosen to focus on quality this holiday season.  Not only do we want to stretch our dollars as far as they will go, we want to do something to give back whenever possible, and choosing to support companies that have the same philosophy is an effortless way to do that.

Here is a little bit from them:
For the past 100 years, the Naumes family has been committed to growing quality fruit for generations to enjoy. As one of the largest family- owned and operated pear growers in the world, we take great pride in the quality pears we produce.

In addition to our pear gifts, we have also expanded our selection to include Gourmet Gifts. This gives our customers the opportunity to help Feed the Need™ every day through our donatefruit™ cause.

For every gift purchased through the Naumes’ donatefruit™ cause, every purchase will be matched—pound for pound—with an equal donation of fresh fruit to food banks that Feed The Need™.  For 1 in 8 American’s hunger is a daily reality. Fresh and nutritious food is a vital component of healthy nutrition. Because needy families often rely on cheaper, processed foods that can lead to obesity and other health problems, donatefruit™ is committed to providing healthy fresh fruit to their tables. To date, the Naumes family has given over 10 million pounds of fresh fruit to Feeding America!
We were fortunate enough to partner with Naumes on a review and giveaway that I just know you will love.

We received the Perfect Pear Gift Set and just reading the description got us salivating, but it really didn't do justice to the glorious contents-  from presentation to taste, this lovely hand packed gift was a delight in every sense of the word.

The first layer held a delectable array of gourmet goodies-  Two Colossal Comice Pears, Beef Summer Sausage, Deluxe Mixed Nuts, Blue Cheese Walnut Fig Foccacia Crackers, Black Olive Tapenade and Organic Dark Chocolate Covered Pears.  The pears were wrapped in shiny purple foil packaging, we assume to protect them from bruising- and it made a lovely presentation.

Once we removed them we found a Wood Cutting Board & Cheese Knife and a Pear Planker.  Here's where it got fun-  we unwrapped one of the pears and realized it was a bit hard- that's a good thing because it stayed nice with no bruising and of course it's usually no big to wait a day or two for it to finish ripening to perfection, but because we wanted to get the review up and give you all a chance to win we decided to go ahead and cut it open to sample.

After unwrapping the handy-dandy pear planker, we ran into a wee bit of a problem as evidenced by the photo-  the pear was too big for the planker which was more than okay with us, in this case bigger is definitelly better.

Looking at all the goodies set out on the table we barely knew where to start- one thing looked better than the next.
We wanted to be good, we tried to be good but since none of us have ever had organic chocolate covered pears before we just had to taste those first- wowsa they are seriously delicious and very unique.  The dark chocolate is divine and a perfect counterbalance to the sweet pears.

Next up came the cashews-  if you are like us and used to buying the cans at the grocery or discount store, you will be amazed-  nice, big fat nuts without all the broken pieces that you usually find and as Dev says, the perfect level of salt to nut ratio-  and no there is not even a smidge of a crumb left. ;-)

Dawn is not an olive fan so she tried the yummy walnut fig foccacia crackers with a pear plank and a slice of the beef summer sausage, which comes pre-sliced in a vacuum-sealed package and is nice and fresh.  This was the first time we had seen summer sausage pre-sliced and it was a nice surprise, which also would come in handy for a picnic.  Her verdict-absolutely delicious and even though the pear could have used a bit more ripening it was fabulous and will only get juicier and sweeter letting it ripen longer.

Kyra is a big olive fan and she loved the black olive tapenade so much she got herself a little dish to put some on or as she says she would have gobbled up the whole big jar.  My personal opinion is that I am glad she saved some because I think it will be absolutely perfect on a muffaletta sandwich and since today is grocery day we're going to get the fixings to make one.

While we were busy sampling, Pan (remember, we told you about Ki's new kitty, she brings him up to visit us and the doggies- who all get along great) had other ideas.  We had set the box on the couch while we went through the goodies and we found a cuteness overload.

The Perfect Pear Gift Set is Naumes signature wedding/anniversary gift set, but we all enjoyed it and since we had it as a snack and not a meal it was more than enough for 5 of us- with leftover tapenade to enjoy later.  At $49.95 we found it well worth it- and since about $25 a person is right in our usual price range for non close family members gift range it is perfect for gift-giving.  And remember, your gift gives twice.  Give a gift and Feed the Need™. Donate Fruit™ gives a pound of fresh fruit for every pound purchased.

On to the good part- Naumes has generously offered one of our readers their own Perfect Pear Gift Set exactly like we received.  *Kitty NOT included.
Each hand-packed box includes Two Colossal Comice Pears, Beef Summer Sausage, Deluxe Mixed Nuts, Blue Cheese Walnut Fig Foccacia Crackers, Black Olive Tapenade, Wood Cutting Board & Cheese Knife,  Pear Planker and Organic Dark Chocolate Covered Pears.

THE GIVEAWAY: One of our extremely lucky readers is going to receive a Perfect Pear Gift Set from Naumes.  Open to residents of the US 18+ ends 12/5 at 11:59pm CST
Winner will be announced here, emailed and announced on Prizey.

Old El Paso Review and Giveaway ~closed~

I was excited to get this blog tour, because even before we found out about this, Old El Paso was my taco seasoning of choice. I myself like to buy a big canister of the seasoning- it is more eco-friendly packaging, and then I can flavor things JUST right. I use it in more than just tacos, too- I use it for a few of my ground-beef based soups (and yes, especially taco soup) and sometimes to flavor my chicken. A lot of taco seasonings are too hot for my family, or too heavy on cumin for mom- this is a brand that my family all tends to be happy with.

Old El Paso offers everything from diced green chilis, which we use for everything (most of us don't care much for jalapeno but we love the chilis) to enchilada sauce, dinner kits, salsa and more.

Now Old El Paso is doing another thing to be happy about; pushing family night. If you pay attention to the blog at all, you know that food is what ties us together, be it cooking or eating, or making each other try something that tastes completely terrible!  Food is what brings us together, so I am happy to support Family Taco Night.   Fun, family, good food- what's not to love.

For a fun twist on taco night, Old El Paso recommends Double Layer Tacos or Chicken Ranch Tacos.

If you know us, you know we're goofballs and bond over the oddest things like bad tv marathons and goofy games, and now there's something new to try.

Old El Paso says to keep your family laughing at the dinner table, have some fun with El Tacodor™, the world’s only Family Taco Night Game. With El Tacodor, your family can share a special night at home by challenging one another to quick fire trivia, wordplay and pantomime. Visit www.ElTacodor.com today to download instructions, a score card, and a challenge sheet for even more fun on Family Taco Night!

You can even download a printable coupon for $0.60 off any two Old El Paso products.Optional Entries: the main entry is all you need to do but if you want to up your chances you can do any or all of the following:(You can find any links and buttons that aren't in the post on the sidebar or bottom of page.)

How to: add share this buttons to the bottom of each post

Some of you have noticed that I was able to figure out how to put all of the social networking share buttons at the bottom of my blog posts instead of at the top, also to get several in a row (well, 2 rows) and though it took me quite a while to figure out, since no one had an easy tutorial that I found, especially since I wanted to make it as easy as possible for you to a) share the site and posts and b) get extra entries for our giveaways, I played around with the coding until I got something that made me happy- at least for the moment. ;-)

If you want to use the buttons I have, use this exact code- if you want a different style. just replace that part of the code.  You want to copy it exactly EXCEPT replace with your urls and user names.

Here are the simple step by step instructions so you can add the buttons to your site.

Copy and paste this exact code to your editing program (word, notepad, etc)

Replace YOUR URL HERE and YOUR USER NAME with your actual urls and user names.

Go to your blogger dashboard and click Edit HTML
Click Download Full Template if you want to save a copy (RECOMMENDED)

Click Expand Widget Templates

Search (use control f) for data.post/body .

Add code immediately after.

Click on preview and it will open in a new window.  If you like how it looks, click save.  Check to make sure each button works and you have directed it to the proper url.

If you find this tutorial useful, feel free to spread the word, we'd really appreciate it. A link back would be appreciated. Knowing we helped someone avoid the headaches and hassles really brightens our day. :-)

More easy blog tutorials can be found here.

Wordless Wednesday- Ki's new Kitty Pan w/link

Meet Kyra's new kitty, Pan, rescued from the side of the road. He's so named because when she was little she blamed EVERYTHING she did on Peter Pan which was her fave movie at the time. Apparently Kitty Pan is very mischievous and very daring and doesn't give a rat's rear about the consequences either, just like the boy who never grew up.

***Edit from GeekyMommy: Actually, he is named Pan because he chases his shadow, somewhat obsessively. And he is a Coffee Shop rescue kitty, who was too curious about the road... close enough to the same, but being a coffee shop cat has its own quirks.***

Perricone MD anti aging products giveaway $150

It's no secret that I'm sliding towards 50 with a rapidness that sometimes astonishes me.  I'm not exactly kicking and screaming as age is just a number but I want to look as good as  I can for as long as I can.

I was blessed with good genes, but living in pain and multiple surgeries have taken their toll and while I don't look my age, I really can't stand when my skin looks dull and lifeless either.

I've recently started using Perricone MD anti aging products thanks to some wins and though I'll never look 20 again, I don't look like I am in my late 40s either, and that's a very good thing.  My skin tone is more vibrant and even and the more I use it the better I look.

I have several  products including the Cold Plasma, Ester C Serum and No Foundation Foundation among others and there are a few more I'd like to try- as well as some the little divas want to try specifically for younger, acne prone skin.

You can buy skin care products from Perricone MD or you can win the product of your choice valued at $150 or less.

Holiday Guide Savvycents review and giveaway

We are delighted to be able to share with you a product that is not only beautiful, but it's extremely functional as well.

I'm not a snob, exactly, but I like nice things and I carry a really nice purse.  (Thanks, sissy!)  I also like to save money whenever I can, and I am a coupon user.  Not a hardcore, bring out the huge binder warrior, but I know how to save a decent chunk of change at the grocery store.

What I was using were either those little plastic coupon holders or an envelope with the coupons stuffed in plus my wallet, plus my cardholder.  To say it left a little something to be desired is putting it mildly.

When we received the opportunity to review the Savvycents wallet I wasn't sure what to expect, but I figured if I couldn't use it one of the girls certainly could.

First off, it's REALLY nice.  Patent leather wrapped in protective covering and when we pulled it out we were thrilled at how shiny and cushy it is.  It has a zipper that goes completely around which is really handy, I can't tell you how many times change or cards or receipts or who knows what all has slipped out of my wallets.

The Savvycents wallet was designed by Melinda Claudepierre, a SAHM of 3 in 2009 after she switched to the cash envelope system for budgeting.

There are so many great things about the Savvycents wallet it's hard to know where to start.  Along with its stylish good looks it is incredibly easy to organize everything you need for your shopping trips.

When you unzip and open it you will find two distinct sides, one clearly to hold your debit and discount cards (and if you are me your gift cards)and you can tuck your dollars in the back.

The other side has a place for your license, along with an accordion style file system with dividers that you can label with pre-printed tabs or use the blank ones to make your own.  The sky is pretty much the limit here- you can use it to sort your money, or coupons, or deals by store or whatever you can dream up.  I love that there is a snap to hold it closed even when you have the wallet unzipped so even if you accidentally drop it you shouldn't have to scramble to pick things up and figure out where they went since it looks pretty secure.

Apparently you can also put your checkbook in there but I don't know anyone who actually uses a checkbook any more- I even got the last of the stone-aged dinosaurs Ken to switch to a debit card a few years ago-  much more eco-friendly and convenient in my not so humble opinion.  I am sure I will find something to tuck in there, not to worry.

There is a pen holder so I can cross things off my list as I go - well okay, I won't start doing that just because it's easy to get to but theoretically I could. ;-)

So the verdict- will it replace my current wallet?  In a word, yes.  (My wallet is not near as nice as my bag, so I have no deep attachment.)  This will let me ditch the current system (or lack thereof) and organize everything I need in one place and looks good to boot.

They come in black (like the one I received), red and pink and the ARV is $24.99 which is a great value and would make a perfect gift for the fashionably frugal diva in your life.

The best part:  You get a chance to win one for yourself or to give as a gift.
